Fall 2009 - A New Season, A New Start
Greetings
everyone! I'm really looking forward to the fall, welcoming new
members, seeing returning members, and doing some rides and racing.
I've been hard at work designing a new kit, recruiting new members, and
finding new sponsors for 2009 and I really hope to get as much support
internally and externally for the 2008/2009 road and mountain bike
season. There's a lot changing with the UMBRC that has already happened
and is happening now. Former club President, Alex Duggan, has
moved on and graduated, leaving us with a huge hole to fill in terms of
his administrative and logistical skills and his skills on a bike.
Likewise, Category A riders, Alex Czulak, Anthony Maressa, and Chris
Kessler have all moved on to the real world. We wish them the best but
it really is the time for all the new and existing members to step up
and take an active role this coming year.
To let everyone know
ahead of time, I am graduating in the Fall. I will be acting President
for the Fall semester but a new President must step up and take my
role. I will be in the Amherst area working and riding during the
Spring so I can lend a hand to the new President but I cannot race so I
will not be involved too much with the club.
Our first club meeting
will be the first Wednesday everyone is back in school so that's
September 3rd. New members are more than welcome and I expect all
existing members to show up. Membership forms, the club sign-up list,
the hazing policy form, and club dues forms will all be passed out. Of
course we will talk labout upcoming mountain bike races but I want to
get an idea from everyone on new jerseys and ways we can promote the
club during the semester (flyers, campus center tables, fundraisers,
etc.)
I hope to see everyone in September!
Your President,
Jeff Elie
Orchard Assault Results
Thanks
to all of you who came out to the race on Sunday. Even more thanks to
everyone who helped to organize, set-up, run registration, the
officials, and clean-up. We couldn't do it without your help.
We hope everyone enjoyed it!

UMBRC To Host Orchard Assault
Yeah,
that's right. The UMBRC brought the Orchard Assault to NORBA last year,
and it's back for 2008. The course is tough, don't kid yourself, but
look forward to some action packed racing right here on campus. If
you're lucky, "Block Kid" might even make an appearance. The full flyer
is available [HERE]
Spring Road Season Approaches
Only 4 weeks until the ECCC Spring road season so pull on those thermals and booties and get ready for some frigid March racing!
Beginning
the first weekend in March with races every following weekend until the
end of April, UMBRC riders will hopefully be representing UMass in
another season of collegiate road racing action. If you didn't know
already, we'll be holding meetings on Thursday nights at 7:30PM in the
Campus Center so join the list serve and stay informed about upcoming UMBRC rides, events, and general info.
If
you're planning on participating in any collegiate events this Spring
make sure you attend the meetings on Thursdays so you can pay any dues
you owe, find out about team kits, and organize logistics about race
weekends. With a lot of interest in the road racing from new members in
the fall I'm hoping the road team will expand from the past few years.
Or at least have enough members to do two team time trials. Even maybe
a women's TTT team?
If you're new and you would like to learn more about the UMBRC check out some of the links on the website, send us an e-mail, or check out the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference website to find out what collegiate cycling is all about.
Another Season in the Books
2007 Mountain Season Recap:
We lost our vans.
Duggan smashed his head at Lehigh.
Rob Hyldahl did well in Men's A's.
The
other Men's A riders, Chris Kessler, Anthony Maressa, Jeff Elie, and
Alex Czulak finished a few races and didn't finish a few more.
Dave Bottomley was elected President.
New riders, Uri Halevi and Matt Zanchi placed 1st and 2nd respectively overall in the Men's C category.
Theresa
Maynard returned from Down Under to represent UMass in the Women's A
category and placed fourth overall. It probably was the speed feather.
Kim
Russell also represented UMass in the Women's A category after
sandbagging the Women's B field in her first few cross country races.
Matt Tenure, Hucker Joe, and the rest of the new down hillers did the few gravity events on the ECCC schedule.
Despite having to drive our own cars to races, not one speeding ticket was acquired.
"Yeah...it was sick!"
