Fall 2008 Comes to an End...
What a season, WHAT A SEASON! With many rambunctious newcomers to add on to
an already stacked line-up, UMass had a strong presence at each and every
mountain bike race last fall. YES YES
and YES. The more the merrier. With so many seasoned veterans on board for
next fall, it can only get better. Stupendous
job to everyone who raced. There were
some thrills and some spills (along with a little puking) which made this
season …legendary at that. Seriously
though, thanks to everyone for a great season.
It was a good one.
Brief Recap
-
We got 4th overall in Division I. LOVELY.
-
Tom Sampson won individual overalls and
represented UMBRC at Nationals in North Carolina. What a season. What a freshman.
-
Mike Bartlett dominated in Men’s A XC and ST,
and Sean Kennedy also represented in Men’s A
-
Elie smashed his head multiple times throughout
the season (resulting in 3 new helmets), and Mike Bartlett smashed his cranial
polymers during the Eastern’s ST. The
EPIC CRASH AWARD goes to Nelly Nelson
Klein. He had some great ones throughout
the season, but the end of UNH Downhill #2 really took Nelly for a ride...into
a waterhole. Just to give you an idea of
how intense this kid is, check this video out (pay attention at 91 seconds in). What a hunk.
-
Elie sacrificed the maxima while
off-roading in RothRock State Park (we were lost and trying to find the XC start
line). Later,
Hucker Joe Clemenzi noticed that the threads in Elie’s tires were
exposed through worn rubber, so Elie, being the man he is, rushed
to Walmart that night to buy spankin' new shoes for his car in order to
make it home. Czar Elie is a truper.
-
Uri Halevi, Matt Zanchi, Jeff Cronin, and Mike
Akresh rode Men’s B/C XC and did dam well.
-
Jake Marguiles came to the UNH race and threw up
from excitement during his first lap.
-
Hucker Joe, Shaun LaPlante, Nelson Klein, Chris
Cook, and Tom Sampson finished a bunch of gravity events and managed to pile up
plenty of broken parts
-
Chris Cook…oh Chris… sacrificed his sensitive
parts trying to place in the dual slalom at Eastern’s. He came away with 4th. Much respect.
-
Angry Kim Russell represented Women’s A XC
again, and Taryn Barrette did super well while racing for the first time…until she
got a bummed knee.
